i Remember

I’ve titled my final project i Remember which utilizes mobile devices, specifically an iPod in order to explore urban space as a hybrid mapping/tour project. The map/tour takes place around Union Square in San Francisco, California. (For a specific route see fig. 1.)

I found this part of the city rich with common areas found in any large U.S. urban center, like a large open space and retail shopping such as Macy’s the Disney Store. However, if explored these areas reveal uniqueness not readily perceived to the average tourist or resident. By creating a persona with similar characteristics as these areas I hope to reveal the true distinctiveness of San Francisco in what is usually perceived as a “touristy part of town”.

The piece itself works as a soundtrack in a movie. Here, as in film I attempt to have the listener identify with the lead character. The music helps sets the tone, while the dialogue simply acts as an inner-voice and subtle guide though the space. The screen then becomes what are the listener’s immediate surroundings.
