Walkalong
Lou Pierce
project description
Walkalong is a probe/mapping hybrid wherein the subject is lead to make series of choices based on his or her interpretation of the urban environment around them. This project should bring to life the complicated process of every-day decision making, and the way decisions sometimes effect life in unexpected ways.
The format of this project is a podcast, meant to be played on a portable MP3 player, specifically an ipod. The innovation of 'chapters,' bookmarks within a podcast, allow for the nonlinear structure of the piece. The fact that the piece is aural instead of visual-- after all, chapters occur within a tangible paper book as well-- allows the subject to move and become engaged with their environment, letting them draw connections between what they are simultaneously hearing and experiencing.
The only specification of this project is that it should be done in a 'city,' though the definition of what and where a city is may very from subject to subject. The term 'buildings' is a repeated theme in the podcast, so there is room for conflict should a subject choose and environment without buildings as their 'city.'

This project is non-location specific. It should, however, be done in an urban space, where the ambiance of city life clearly be felt.
