Get on your derive goggles. You will be spelunking in the chambers of Powell B.A.R.T. stations audio memory. Press the play button just before you plunge into the stairwell.

The best strategy is to try to attune your self to the tempo of the sound throbbing in your headphones. Try following those footsteps. The map is a loose guide and time table.

Something strange happens to people in train and subway stations. Time seems to take on another quality when one undertakes the transit system. Initially interested in this phenomenon, and the dialog and interaction of performers and Bart Pedestrians I embarked on loitering in Powell with a recording device. I wanted to look at the interaction between Bart Peds and the musical performer that is always present at peak hours. I imagined that somehow the pedestrians would be revealed as a sort of tempo controlling device--influenceing the character and quality of the performers output. I discovered a direct correlation between the accordian player and the Pedestrians buying their B.A.R.T. passes at the ticket terminals. The beeping and the change return clangs became the percussion section in the accordian players meanderings. In this way the pedestrians unwittingly joined the Powell station band.

The map plots the path that I walked many times in both directions collecting sound. When you move through the space at Powell station you will be moving both forwards and backwards through different accumulated slices of Powell's audio memory.

The reverberating blue striped square in the middle are the Escalators that lead down to the train platform--the audio mapping tour stays away from the train platforms on the principle of avoiding having anyone spend money.

The blue audio file path folding over itself many times is a memory vortex that resonates with the hundreds of performers it provides resonance for. It is also literally composed of thunderous amounts of footsteps since this perfomance junction is a huge confluence for pedestrians embarking on or exiting from their bart journey.
